This text was written in 1956 on the S.S America “en route to Le Havre” by Salvador Dali . In his incomparable style, Dali has the last word with the “critics of antiquated modern art”, and expresses his often extreme and controversial opinions on such world-famous painters as Matisse, Cézanne, Buffet, Pollock, Mondrian and architects such as Le Corbusier and Gaudi. From his masterful answer to the attack on Gaudi and his praise of “Modern”, later defined as Art Nouveau - Style, (initially published in le Minotaure in 1936), to his witty remarks on the ugly, the modern, the technical, the abstract, the visionary genius of Dali is present in every page.
Published in 1957 by Dial Press, New York, this text is reproduced in its integrality here.
